I strongly support the expansion of federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, which has the potential to ease the pain and suffering of millions. Research has shown that embryonic stem cells may be able to form virtually any cell type in the human body, giving them the potential to treat or cure countless diseases and injuries. I joined a group of my colleagues in introducing H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. This legislation ensures that federal funding is available for research only on embryonic stem cells that are left over from in vitro fertilization (IVF) and donated with the consent of the individuals seeking IVF treatments. It does not allow for the creation of new embryonic stem cells simply for research purposes. It also directs NIH to establish ethical standards with which scientists receiving government funds for this work would need to comply. On May 24, 2005, H.R. 810 passed the House with my support by a vote of 238-194. This legislation represented a great bipartisan effort, and I was honored to help educate many of my colleagues on this cutting-edge and complex topic. |
